NEWS FROM THE FESTIVAL

Swedish film director exposes aging spoiled brats in Avalon

22. Sep 2011 / Linda Hassler

A 31-year old Swedish director has taken a swipe at a segment of Sweden's older generation in his first feature film, Avalon. 2011-09-18-Avalonposter.jpgThe film premiered last week at the 2011 Toronto Int'l Film Festival. Its three main characters are all over 60, and they behave very, very badly. The story unfolds over one week in the coastal summer resort town of Bastad. The three have just a week to open a swank nightclub, Avalon, in time for the two-week tennis season.

AVALON WINS FIPRESCI DISCOVERY AWARD IN TORONTO

19. Sep 2011

AVALON has won the FIPRESCI Discovery Award for Best Feature Film debut at the Toronto International Film Festival 2011. FIPRESCI, which is the international federation of film critics, gave the following verdict from their jury:

”An assured, darkly humorous portrait of an affluent class in hedonistic self-denial, Avalon marks the arrival of a promising new voice in Swedish filmmaking.”

During Toronto International Film Festival AVALON was much appraised:

AVALON

14. Sep 2011 / John Anderson / Variety

Bona-fide scoundrels are seldom a movie's centerpiece, and the character in the middle of helmer Axel Petersen's splendid debut feature "Avalon," doesn't quite qualify as a hard-core villain. Still, the baggy-eyed ex-party boy, ex-felon, club promoter and general reprobate, played by Johannes Brost, is a longshot for sympathy, which makes Petersen's moral juggling act seem all the more impressive. The usual distrib obstacles will apply to this Swedish-language production, but Petersen is a...

Other people's limos

13. Sep 2011 / Nathalie Atkinson / National Post

The only festival film that Swedish filmmaker Axel Petersén has made time to get to, other than his own, is fellow Scandinavian Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive. "It's the most beautiful action film I've seen - it's so f--king sexy!"

I then remind him that Refn also made Valhalla Rising. "Which was not so great," he concedes with a chuckle. "It was gruesome, eh? It was like Viking porn or something."

"I like cars, I'll admit," Petersen says. (Indeed: As we talk and walk to...

LÄCKBERG'S NICE LITTLE MURDERS HAVE BEGUN

13. Sep 2011

The highly anticipated crime-project THE FJÄLLBACKA MURDERS has started principal photography. Still above shows leads Claudia Galli and Richard Ulfsäter on the set during takes. (Photographer: Elisabeth Toll)

Launched in Cannes this year, THE FJÄLLBACKA MURDERS gaps over a total budget of approx. EUR 30 million and encapsulates a production of 12 films of which ten are intended for broadcasting and two are feature film length – the first feature film will be an adaption of...
