NEWS FROM THE FESTIVAL

Berlin: 'Out Stealing Horses' Director on Embracing Nature (and Stellan Skarsgard)

18. Feb 2019 / Scott Roxborough / The Hollywood Reporter

Hans Petter Moland speaks to The Hollywood Reporter about his Norwegian drama, a Berlin competition frontrunner, based on the Per Petterson best-seller about a man reflecting on a pivotal moment in his past.

Among a Berlin competition lineup packed with grimy tales of a German serial killer (Fatih Akin's The Golden Glove), an abusive priest (Francois Ozon's By the Grace of God) and an overworked woman on the edge of a nervous breakdown (Marie Kreutzer's...

Sundance winner 'Queen Of Hearts' gets UK deal with Thunderbird

18. Feb 2019 / Orlando Parfitt / ScreenDaily

Thunderbird Releasing has acquired May el-Toukhy’s Sundance hit Queen Of Hearts for the UK and Ireland, with a Summer 2019 release planned.

Queen Of Hearts won Sundance’s audience award (world cinema dramatic) and the film also recently picked up Goteborg’s Dragon Award, which is the world’s most lucrative film award with a cash prize of $110,000.

El-Toukhy’s second feature stars Trine Dyrholm as a woman who embarks on a dangerous affair...

'Out Stealing Horses' ('Ut Og Stjaele Hester'): Film Review | Berlin 2019

18. Feb 2019 / Deborah Young / The Hollywood Reporter

Stellan Skarsgard retires to solitary life in the Norwegian woods after the death of his wife, but the past comes knocking in Hans Petter Moland’s drama.

An extraordinary feeling for nature and the seasons of life pervades Out Stealing Horses (Ut Og Stjaele Hester), an ambitious reflection on our responsibility to others from Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland. A resonant film made for adults constructed out of breathtaking landscapes, this Berlin competition title...

Berlin Film Review: ‘Out Stealing Horses’

18. Feb 2019 / Guy Lodge / Variety

At several points in “Out Stealing Horses,” a seemingly bland observation turns out to carry far more cutting emotional weight. “Fathers are great,” says one old man to another, shortly before an enfolded series of revelations that suggests both men can hardly believe such a thing. “That’s life, things happen,” says a father to a son, knowing full well that nothing in the immediate future is going to happen quite as it should. Norwegian novelist Per Petterson’s international bestseller made...

Norway's Hans Petter Moland on his Berlinale contender 'Out Stealing Horses'

18. Feb 2019 / IDA STORM

Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland saw the potential for a homecoming with his new film Out Stealing Horses, his 11th feature and his fourth to compete for Berlin’s Golden Bear.

Moland had first been approached to adapt Per Petterson’s Norwegian novel in 2004, but he was in an international state of mind having just made Vietnam and US-set The Beautiful Country. Yet he found it resonated with him in a different way when he revisited the story about five...
