The company plans a third-quarter release for the box office hit.
Music Box Films has announced that they have picked up North American rights for Hannes Holm's smash Swedish hit, "A Man Called Ove." The film opened in Sweden in December of last year and swiftly became the fifth bestselling local film in Sweden. In January, it picked up 3 Gulbagge awards, including the Best Actor Award for star Rolf Lassgård.
Per Music Box, "The film is based on the bestselling book by Fredrik Backman, which has been published in more than 30 countries worldwide and tells a heartfelt, poetic and humorous story about a grumpy old man who has given up on everyone including himself. But his life and negative approach to the world is put to the test when a new family moves in next door."
Of the news, Susan Wendt, the Head of Sales at TrustNordisk, which handled the deal, said, "We are more than thrilled to have Music Box Films on board. They did an amazing job on 'The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared,' and we are confident that they will bring 'A Man Called Ove' to an even higher level."
The film was produced by Annica Bellander and Nicklas Wikström for Tre Vänner in co-operation with Film i Väst, SVT, Nordisk Film, Nordsvensk Filmunderhållning Fantefilm with support from The Swedish Film Institute, Norwegian Film Institute and Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
The company plans to release the film sometime in the fall of this year.
