'A Royal Affair' star Mikkel Boe Folsgaard will play Hamlet in the new Shakespeare adaptation from British director Ken McMullen.

Ian McKellen, Gabriel Byrne and Connie Nielsen have signed on to star in Hamlet Revenant, a new adaptation of the iconic Shakespeare play, which British artist and filmmaker Ken McMullen will direct.

Danish actor Mikkel Boe Folsgaard, best known for his break-out performance as a real-life Danish king in the Oscar-nominated A Royal Affair, and more recently seen in this year's Danish Oscar nominee Land of Mine, will play Hamlet in the new version, which is set to begin shooting in the second half of 2017. Newcomer Maria Boda will play Ophelia. The cast also includes Lambert Wilson, Dominique Pinon and Lex Shrapnel.

France's Albatros Films is producing together with German group Twenty Twenty Vision, Italy's Filmexport and Denmark's Sequoia Pictures. The film has backing from German network ZDF and French-German channel Arte.

TrustNordisk has picked up international sales rights to Hamlet Revenant and is pitching the title to buyers in Cannes.

McKellen recently featured as the voice of Cogsworth in Disney's live-action reboot of The Beauty and the Beast. Gabriel Byrne co-starred, alongside Bel Powley and Nathan Lane, in the Toronto festival entry Carrie Philby, and Connie Nielsen will appear as Queen Hippolyta in Warner Brothers' upcoming Wonder Woman.
